About

The Annotated Nashville is an index of the city’s literary life: the bookstores, libraries, literary organizations, reading series, writing programs and presses that make up Nashville’s reading and writing community.

Why “annotated”

Each entry is an editor’s short note on something that already exists. It says what the place or group is, what sets it apart, how to take part and where the facts come from. We describe; we don’t review. Nashville already has publications that report on and review its literary life, so we list them rather than repeat their work.

How entries are chosen

An editor chooses every entry, checks it against its sources and rechecks it at least every six months. Each page shows the date it was last verified. Listings are free, and no one can pay to be included or featured. We use software, including AI tools, to build the site and flag entries that may be out of date, but people decide what is listed and check every fact before it is published.

The full rules are in the editorial policy.

Who makes it

The editor of The Annotated Nashville has worked as a school librarian, an independent bookseller, and a software engineer in the book industry. Any personal or professional connection to a listed entry is disclosed on that entry’s page.

Why a directory

Libraries organize what exists so people can find it. This guide does the same for Nashville’s bookstores, libraries, reading series, writing programs and presses, and keeps them in one place, each linked to the others it works with.
